Role overview A remote-first U.S. opportunity for a senior backend engineer to help build the high-throughput decision engine behind a flagship card product, where every transaction is backed by an individual loan. The role focuses on designing and operating large-scale distributed services that match fragmented payment-network data to the right loan in real time. Work involves close collaboration with product, analytics, design, legal, and accounting partners to shape the money-movement platform powering millions of swipes.
Responsibilities - Drive technical strategy by leading planning, prioritization, and execution of projects aligned with product, technical, and business goals. - Lead end-to-end system design and development of large-scale, high-availability services, including APIs and data models for microservices and event-driven architectures. - Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Analytics, Design, Legal, and Accounting to define requirements and execute card loan attribution and lifecycle strategy. - Ensure system health and performance by analyzing and troubleshooting complex technical issues, optimizing existing code, and driving long-term scalability and robustness. - Mentor and grow the team by guiding junior engineers, leading technical discussions and design reviews, and championing best practices through code review.
Requirements - 5+ years of software development or engineering experience with deep system design and architecture knowledge. - Proven ability to lead projects, inspire team growth, and foster a culture of continuous learning. - Excellent communication skills for sharing complex ideas with diverse audiences. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a creative, solution-oriented mindset. - Proficiency in modern languages such as Python, Kotlin, or similar. - Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes). - Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases, web frameworks, and RESTful API development. - Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Nice to have - Background in fintech, payments, lending, or other regulated financial services. - Experience with event-driven architectures, distributed systems, and high-throughput, low-latency services.
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first role within the United States; new hires attend an in-person onboarding experience. - U.S. Pacific base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT): $195,000–$255,000; Sapphire range (all other U.S. states): $173,000–$233,000, plus equity, monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech, and 100% subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents. - Flexible time off, generous holiday calendars, and an employee stock purchase plan.
