Principal Product Designer, Agentic Chat
Job details
About this role
Role overview Lead the end-to-end customer experience for chat-based AI agents in a business software product. This principal-level designer sets direction across the agent surface, defining how agents communicate, handle uncertainty, manage long-running work, and earn customer trust. The role calls for hands-on product thinking, close engineering partnership, and working proposals even when briefs are limited.
Responsibilities - Design how agents show progress, request information, and report results for work that takes time to complete. - Shape interactions for agent-created artifacts, applications, and automations, including how customers access and understand the outputs. - Make usage costs and approval steps clear before and after agent actions. - Use evaluation methods to judge readiness before launch and guide improvements after release. - Design for uncertainty, failure, and partial results so customers can assess the reliability of agent output. - Prototype in code, contribute working changes, and partner with product and engineering on the customer-facing effects of agent infrastructure.
Requirements - At least two years designing AI or agent-based products where model behavior is central to the experience, including lessons from real user failures. - Experience building or using agent evaluations and explaining how results influenced launch decisions and later changes. - A track record of prototyping with AI coding tools, contributing code changes, and reading backend interfaces. - Working knowledge of production language-model behavior, including latency, streaming, tool use, confidence, and failure modes. - Experience working directly with engineers as part of the delivery process.
Nice to have - Product experience for sales, marketing, revenue operations, or customer success teams. - Familiarity with enterprise workflows, data-dense interfaces, bulk actions, or long-running jobs. - Experience designing products where usage incurs a direct customer cost. - Ability to combine user research with evaluation of AI behavior.
Benefits and work setup - Remote role. The stated U.S. base salary range is $171,430–$269,390, with additional compensation potentially available. Benefits and well-being programs are offered.
