Lead Engineer - Payments Platform

Role overview A lead engineering role on an early-stage payments platform team building the money-movement backbone for a global small-business software product. The position combines hands-on production code with foundational architectural decisions, mentoring, and close cross-functional partnership.

Responsibilities - Design and build high-throughput distributed services for payment orchestration, risk and fraud, and multi-provider connectivity. - Contribute foundational code, prototypes, and proof-of-concepts directly to production. - Develop a global bill payment product aimed at simplifying small-business cash flow. - Champion AI-assisted engineering practices to accelerate developer workflows across the team. - Partner with product, security, risk, and operations to translate complex business needs into resilient systems.

Requirements - Track record delivering highly available, distributed backend systems under real-world constraints. - Deep understanding of system architecture, API design, and both SQL and NoSQL databases. - Proficiency in a modern backend stack such as C#, Java, Go, or C++, plus cloud-native platforms like AWS. - Hands-on mindset with production code, prototypes, and technical deep dives. - Experience setting technical direction and mentoring engineers in an inclusive culture. - Comfort partnering with product, design, and other cross-functional teams.

Benefits and work setup - Remote position based within Washington State, with working hours that overlap Australia and New Zealand time zones plus periodic in-person team days. - Base salary range of $206,000–$260,000 USD, plus eligibility for annual bonus and equity programs. - Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) match, 21 days PTO, wellbeing leave, paid parental leave, and 12 paid holidays.
