About this role

Role overview

A research-focused AI company is building systems that aim to understand the world accurately and help people pursue knowledge. They are hiring humanities specialists to provide expert judgment that shapes how a large language model reasons, sources claims, and communicates about humanistic subjects. The work centers on scholarly evaluation and the creation of high-quality training data, not creative writing.

Responsibilities

- Evaluate model outputs for factual accuracy, logical coherence, fallacious reasoning, and unstated assumptions - Flag confident-sounding errors, anachronisms, misused sources, ideological slant, and claims that outrun the available evidence - Write exemplary responses and reference answers that distinguish primary evidence, secondary interpretation, and speculation - Steel-man opposing views before critiquing them, and clearly mark what is settled, contested, or unknown - Anchor annotations in primary sources whenever they exist, then weigh secondary scholarship against that record - Partner with engineering teams to design evaluation tasks, rubrics, and test cases that strengthen model behavior in the humanities - Help define standards for good model conduct on contested humanistic questions: precise, sourced, proportionately confident, and resistant to fashionable or motivated readings

Requirements

- Deep knowledge in at least one humanities field such as linguistics, history, classical studies, literature, poetry, philosophy, ethics, visual arts, or performing arts - Ability to assess arguments for validity, soundness, hidden premises, and category errors, not only surface correctness - Habitual reliance on primary sources, with skill weighing them against secondary literature - Capacity to steel-man opposing views and separate settled knowledge from interpretation or speculation - Excellent analytical writing in English: clear, precise, and calibrated to the strength of the evidence - Comfort working from evolving instructions to produce annotations, critiques, and reference answers at a consistently high standard

Nice to have

- PhD in a relevant field, or equivalent demonstrated scholarly depth - Published analytical work such as peer-reviewed articles, monographs, critical editions, or catalog essays - Experience in teaching, academic peer review, archival research, textual criticism, historiography, or formal argument analysis - Range across more than one listed field, or across historically and culturally distinct canons within a field - Familiarity with evaluating AI or LLM outputs, building benchmarks, or creating training data - Public writing or lectures that make difficult humanistic material accurate without flattening it

Benefits and work setup

- Hourly pay range of $35–$75 for U.S. candidates, with international rates discussed during the recruitment process; rate depends on experience, skills, education, location, and qualifications - Tutor roles may be offered as full-time, part-time, or contractor positions depending on needs and candidate fit - Contractor positions carry flexible hours with no fixed commitment; projects typically average at least 10 hours per week but vary with scope - Remote work from any location worldwide, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone compatibility, and role-specific needs - U.S. candidates cannot be hired in Wyoming or Illinois at this time; visa sponsorship is not provided - Personal-device users need a Chromebook, Mac with macOS 11.0 or later, or Windows 10 or later - Eligible U.S. positions include health insurance, a 401(k) plan, and paid sick leave; specifics are shared during the interview process
