AI Tutor - Design Specialist

Role overview

A small, engineering-driven AI research team is hiring a Design Specialist to strengthen the training and evaluation of its language models. The work centers on applying professional design judgment to data annotation, critique, and reference creation across visual, interface, web, and interactive media. It is a hands-on contributor role in a flat organization where strong written communication, prioritization, and curiosity are expected from every team member.

Responsibilities

- Review and critique design outputs across formats, including static visuals, layouts, documents, websites, interactive prototypes, and games. - Identify work that looks attractive but fails in use, and clearly articulate the underlying problems. - Refine, restyle, or rebuild underperforming examples to produce high-quality reference work. - Write precise annotations and design rationale that distinguish mediocre, competent, and excellent work. - Contribute to labeled datasets covering graphic design, interface design, web experiences, game feel, and related design writing. - Partner with engineering staff on evaluation tasks, rubrics, and examples that set a high quality bar.

Requirements

- Demonstrated professional experience in at least one design discipline such as graphic, brand or visual, product or UI/UX, web, game design, or illustration. - A portfolio showing strong taste and finished, high-quality work. - Sharp fundamentals in hierarchy, typography, spacing, color, composition, consistency, and clarity of communication. - Ability to judge design quality outside your primary specialty and explain decisions clearly. - Excellent written English for critiques, annotations, and design reasoning. - High attention to detail and comfort working from evolving instructions in a fast-paced evaluation setting.

Nice to have

- Strength across more than one design domain. - Experience shipping or professionally reviewing websites, product interfaces, or games. - Familiarity with accessibility and inclusive design principles such as contrast, readability, target size, and clear information architecture. - Working knowledge of modern tools like Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, game engines, or frontend basics. - Hands-on experience with generative AI design tools and a clear point of view on AI output quality. - Background in design critique, art direction, QA, data annotation, or AI evaluation work.
