Database Architect
Job details
About this role
Role overview Shape data architecture across legacy systems and new AI-powered applications. The work pairs untangling business rules embedded in large SQL Server procedures with designing semantic models, retrieval systems, and data flows that help AI agents use domain knowledge effectively.
Responsibilities - Assess and break down complex SQL Server stored procedures, planning how to move business logic into domain or application services while keeping database procedures focused on data access. - Establish reusable modernization approaches, including patterns for domain boundaries, canonical schemas, event-driven integration, and data migration. - Design semantic data models and vector database solutions for retrieval-augmented generation, including embeddings, chunking, similarity search, and hybrid retrieval. - Build or guide embedding pipelines and knowledge representations that provide AI agents with relevant, current domain context. - Define ways to evaluate retrieval quality, including accuracy and relevance, and improve systems using feedback. - Use AI-assisted engineering tools to speed up database analysis, documentation, and migration work; help teams adopt effective patterns.
Requirements - Demonstrated experience decomposing complex stored procedures and migrating business logic into application services. - Data architecture experience across relational, NoSQL, and analytical platforms; examples in the source include SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cosmos DB, Snowflake, and lakehouse systems. - Production experience with event-driven patterns such as change data capture, Kafka, outbox, event sourcing, or CQRS. - Strong data modeling skills, including canonical models, schema evolution, and designing extensible structures. - Hands-on experience with at least one vector database and a sound understanding of RAG, embeddings, retrieval tuning, and hybrid search. - Active use of AI coding assistants for database work, with understanding of how to apply them to engineering tasks.
Benefits and work setup - The source lists health, dental, and vision coverage; retirement savings, paid time off, health savings and flexible spending accounts, life and disability insurance, and tuition reimbursement. - A base pay range of $165,800–$204,400 is listed; actual pay depends on qualifications and other factors.
