Senior Network Engineer

Role overview Step in as the first dedicated network engineer at a small startup building its own bare-metal infrastructure in colocation datacenters to power fast CI runners for GitHub Actions. The role owns the network from empty racks through production traffic and into new site builds, combining deep technical design with operational responsibility. It is a hands-on, high-ownership position reporting directly to the founders and partnering with the platform engineering team.

Responsibilities - Design, deploy, and operate leaf-spine datacenter fabrics, including the internet edge and out-of-band network. - Run BGP with transit providers and peers, manage routing security (IRR and RPKI), and operate DDoS protection at the edge. - Lead new site turn-ups end to end, including cabling plans, device staging, validation, and acceptance testing. - Manage network configuration as code with a source of truth, templates, automated checks, and zero-touch provisioning. - Direct remote hands, cabling vendors, carriers, and hardware vendors across sites with no on-site staff. - Build monitoring and alerting, and use the resulting data for capacity planning. - Partner with platform engineers on Linux host networking for the virtualization stack. - Author the designs, procedures, and runbooks the rest of the team relies on, and participate in the on-call rotation.

Requirements - Seven or more years of network engineering experience, primarily on production datacenter, cloud, or service provider networks. - Hands-on experience building at least one datacenter or PoP network from scratch. - Strong knowledge of BGP, ECMP, leaf-spine fabrics, link aggregation, and fast convergence behavior. - Production experience running an internet edge, including transit and peering turn-ups and traffic engineering. - Production experience with at least one major switching platform such as Arista, Juniper, Cisco, or SONiC. - Strong automation skills with Python and Ansible or comparable tools, with configuration living in Git. - Solid understanding of the physical layer, including optics, DAC and fiber cabling, structured cabling, and cross-connects. - Comfort on the Linux command line with a working grasp of the Linux network stack, plus clear written English for procedures that remote technicians can follow.

Nice to have - Experience at a cloud provider, CDN, carrier, or internet exchange. - Familiarity with NetBox or another network source of truth. - Streaming telemetry and flow monitoring such as gNMI and sFlow. - KVM and virtual machine networking, NAT at scale, and nftables. - IPv6 in production. - Participation in operator communities such as SANOG, INNOG, or APNIC.
