Role overview
Lead a backend engineering team responsible for high-availability services and APIs that support customer-facing digital experiences at large scale. The role combines people management with architectural ownership across distributed services, platform integrations, content metadata, and operational resilience. You will also align backend direction with product, legal, machine learning, and client-platform needs.
Responsibilities
- Manage, mentor, hire, and support the career development of backend engineers, including performance reviews. - Set engineering practices for development, code review, production ownership, and sustainable on-call work. - Guide the design and evolution of high-performance APIs and distributed services running in Kubernetes. - Make architectural decisions for gateways, traffic routing, service communication, data handling, scalability, observability, and security. - Oversee metadata and content services, including licensing checks, availability windows, and partner data ingestion. - Improve failover, disaster recovery, and deployment practices, and provide technical leadership during major traffic events. - Partner across product and technical teams; set responsible practices for AI-assisted development and assess AI-enabled engineering improvements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field. - At least five years of experience as a backend software engineer, software engineer, or in a related occupation. - Experience designing and operating highly available distributed systems serving substantial production traffic. - Experience building REST APIs and gRPC services and operating Kubernetes in production. - Experience implementing observability through logging, metrics, and monitoring. - Experience with Elixir and Rust in backend services, API gateways or proxy systems, and metadata or content-platform services.
