Job details
About this role
Role overview A hands-on Design Engineer role at a small, fast-moving open source infrastructure startup, blending product design craft with real production frontend engineering. The position owns UI decisions end to end, shaping both the web app and marketing surfaces while helping raise the overall design sensibility of the engineering team.
Responsibilities - Design and build polished, production-quality UI across the web app and marketing surfaces - Partner closely with engineers to ship new features with a strong focus on design craft and UX - Own design decisions end to end, from rough concept and problem statements through shipped code - Build and evolve the design system and component library as the product grows - Improve accessibility, responsiveness, and interaction polish across existing surfaces - Prototype new ideas quickly in code as well as static mockups to support fast iteration - Help instill a stronger design and UX sensibility across the wider engineering team
Requirements - A portfolio showing both design quality and the ability to ship real, production UI personally - Strong modern frontend engineering skills in React and TypeScript, including experience with Remix or comparable frameworks - A sharp eye for visual and interaction detail covering typography, spacing, motion, and overall feel - Comfort working from a problem statement rather than a fully-specced design and the ability to drive design decisions independently - For remote work, residence within CET to ET timezones (GMT+1:00 to GMT-5:00), with willingness to attend in-person events throughout the year
Nice to have - Experience owning design end to end at a small startup without a separate design team - Background at a developer tools company or strong empathy for developers as end users - Experience building or evolving a design system and component library - Track record of shipping quickly and iterating in public - Based in the UK and able to join the team in London in person - Contributions to open source projects - Prior experience as a venture-backed startup founder - An active social media presence
Benefits and work setup - Generous, transparent compensation and equity - Async working style with room for heads-down, meeting-free days - Home office support including equipment for a comfortable setup - Generous vacation policy (25 days excluding national holidays), plus sick leave and generous parental leave - Annual training budget for books, subscriptions, or online courses - Pension and 401(k) contributions depending on location - Small, flat-hierarchy team with autonomy, continuous learning support, and active involvement in the open source community on Discord and GitHub
