About this role
Role overview Lead multiple product engineering squads at a growing education technology company that combines AI with expert human scheduling support to help schools build better master schedules. As Director of Engineering, you will set the technical direction, manage people, and own delivery outcomes across teams working on mission-critical software used by districts across 20+ states.
Responsibilities - Partner with Product and cross-functional stakeholders to define squad goals, align engineering priorities, and develop staffing strategies that balance business constraints with delivery needs. - Identify and shepherd key architecture and engineering decisions that affect squads' ability to ship high-quality software efficiently. - Establish engineering-wide practices for production quality, security, testing, and scaling; serve as the escalation point for major incidents and drive continuous improvement from retrospectives. - Recruit, hire, and manage team members across multiple squads, owning performance management, retention, and growth conversations. - Unblock cross-team challenges, monitor team health, and step in hands-on for critical needs while biasing toward empowering the team. - Represent engineering in internal and external settings, including high-stakes conversations with stakeholders.
Requirements - Prior experience in technical leadership roles such as tech lead, engineering manager, or director, driving business, product, and technical outcomes. - Hands-on development and design experience with demanding architectures in terms of scale, security, and product considerations. - Demonstrated ability to onboard to a variety of tech stacks; the environment uses React, Python, AWS, and MongoDB, but exact overlap is not required. - Track record of managing and scaling multiple teams and representing your organization in high-stakes conversations. - Experience guiding engineering organizations through major technical decisions, platform maturation, and changes in scale. - Comfort working in ambiguous, fast-paced startup environments with an ownership mentality and customer-focused orientation.
Nice to have - Prior experience or strong interest in educational technology products.
Benefits and work setup - Comprehensive benefits including health insurance, parental leave, 401(k), unlimited PTO, coworking access, and equity in a fast-growing startup.
