Young Investigator, FlexOlmo

Role overview This postdoctoral research role focuses on language models designed to work flexibly with varied data, including research in mixture-of-experts architectures, long-context modeling, and retrieval. The investigator will lead or collaborate on a high-impact project, develop models and open-source research tools, publish findings, and help mentor junior researchers. The program is described as a one-to-three-year appointment with a flexible start date.

Responsibilities - Define and lead an independent research project within a collaborative language-modeling effort. - Investigate model architectures and training approaches for making effective use of diverse data. - Train and release models and build open-source software for the research community. - Develop and publish rigorous research for leading AI conferences or journals. - Mentor junior researchers, including doctoral students and interns, while contributing to a team project.

Requirements - A PhD in computer science or a related field, or expected completion within one year, with research experience in machine learning, NLP, language and vision, or a related area. - Strong individual-contributor research and engineering skills, particularly with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch. - A strong publication record at relevant AI venues, assessed for rigor and impact. - Extensive research experience in areas such as large language models, training dynamics, scaling laws, or data curation. - Located in or willing to relocate to Berkeley, California.
