Team Lead, Android Core Product

Role overview Hands-on team lead for a flagship Android text-to-speech application used by tens of millions of readers. The role combines real engineering work with the unglamorous half of leadership: code review, unblocking, consolidating parallel solutions, and shifting verification earlier so releases stop relying on manual intervention. The organization is fully remote and flat, with leadership earned through technical skill and consistent delivery.

Responsibilities - Own major features end to end, from design discussions through release, working closely with the design team. - Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features, including background audio behavior. - Review pull requests with substantive feedback, and unblock engineers who have been stuck on the same problem. - Consolidate duplicated solutions across the team, keep shared components tested and documented, and reduce manual steps needed to ship a correct release. - Run planning so the team focuses on work that still needs decisions, determine appropriate review depth per area, and provide nightly builds to QA. - Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and ensure early-career engineers get work they can learn from.

Requirements - 5 or more years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on. - Deep Kotlin expertise, including Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests. - Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work. - Strong intuition about what automated tests can and cannot catch, and a track record of introducing practices that stuck after the initial push. - Product design instinct, user empathy, and the drive to push Android UI and UX beyond the written spec.

Nice to have - Contributions to open source Android projects. - Experience with iOS, web, or Node.js. - Ability to describe how AI tools are integrated into team workflows, not just personal workflows.
