Remote job
Team Lead, Android Core Product
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A hands-on technical lead role for the core Android product of a widely used text-to-speech application available in the Play Store. The position blends significant individual coding with leadership responsibilities, owning major features end-to-end and shaping how the engineering team operates around them. The mission centers on turning written material across PDFs, books, documents, news articles, and websites into audio so people can read faster and remember more.
Responsibilities
- Own major Android features from design decision through release, partnering closely with the design team on real delivery rather than oversight - Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key product surfaces - Review pull requests with substantive technical feedback that develops the team, not just approvals - Identify when multiple team members have solved the same problem and consolidate to a single canonical solution - Shift verification left by expanding automated test coverage so nightly builds confirm rather than discover issues - Unblock engineers who have been stuck, including by diving into the code yourself - Run planning so the team's attention goes to work that still needs decisions - Participate in cross-functional discussions across Product, Design, and Engineering, bringing constraints into those conversations early - Mentor early-career engineers with meaningful work and the time to learn from it
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on - Deep expertise in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, background services, music player services, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit - Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work - Strong intuition about what tests can and cannot cover, paired with a track record of introducing practices that outlasted your direct push - Comfort with the unpopular side of leadership: asking teammates to change how they work and managing the friction that follows - Product design intuition, user empathy, and the drive to push Android UI/UX beyond what the spec asks for - Excellent communication skills
Nice to have
- Contributions to open source Android projects - Experience with iOS, Web, or NodeJS
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote, distributed team with no central office - Salary range of 140,000 to 200,000 USD per year plus bonus and equity, depending on experience - Interview process targets completion within one week, including several technical interviews and a walkthrough assessment on a real codebase
