Job details
About this role
Role overview
Help build a widely used text-to-speech platform that turns articles, documents, and books into audio for a global audience. The Senior Software Engineer will lead development of the native Windows desktop application, driving architecture, performance, and accessibility in a fully remote, distributed engineering organization. This position combines deep hands-on coding with technical leadership across the Windows product line.
Responsibilities
- Architect and develop a native Windows desktop client built on the Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ when appropriate. - Define engineering best practices covering code structure, performance, memory consumption, responsive design, and Windows 10/11 compatibility. - Champion accessibility by integrating Microsoft UI Automation and related Windows APIs, validating focus handling, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader behavior. - Work closely with designers, UX researchers, and QA to plan features, refine UI patterns, and inform the Windows roadmap. - Take end-to-end ownership of features, from concept and design through testing, release, and long-term maintenance. - Investigate and fix difficult issues around bugs, performance, memory leaks, rendering, and platform compatibility.
Requirements
- Several years of experience shipping production Windows desktop software using the Windows App SDK, WinUI or similar UI frameworks, C#, and XAML; exposure to C++ and Win32/WinRT/COM is strongly valued. - Strong grasp of Windows application architecture, including .NET interop with native code. - History of delivering high-quality, performant desktop applications at scale. - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a passion for inclusive software. - Solid foundation in OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and async programming. - Proven ability to lead technical direction, mentor peers, conduct code reviews, and collaborate across disciplines.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with UI automation testing frameworks and writing unit, integration, or end-to-end UI tests. - Background tuning desktop performance, including startup time, memory usage, rendering, and high-DPI rendering. - Experience with localization, globalization, RTL support, and accessibility across regions. - Comfort with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, and error monitoring pipelines. - Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, release engineering, and deployment strategies for desktop apps.
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote work with a globally distributed team; no office requirement. - Significant influence over the architecture and user experience of a Windows product used by millions. - Flat engineering culture that values autonomy, ownership, and end-to-end problem solving. - Mentorship and leadership opportunities with a path toward roles such as Tech Lead or Architect. - Purpose-driven mission centered on building reliable, accessible tools that help people read more effectively. - Austria-based compensation in the range of 30,000–100,000 USD per year plus bonus and equity, depending on experience.
