About this role
Role overview Join a fully remote engineering team building text-to-speech software used by tens of millions of readers worldwide. The Senior Software Engineer will own the technical direction of the native Windows desktop client, shaping architecture and accessibility for a high-traffic consumer product. This is a senior, hands-on IC role with significant influence over long-term platform decisions.
Responsibilities - Lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications built on the Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, and XAML, with C++ used where appropriate. - Set and uphold engineering standards across the Windows codebase covering performance, memory management, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility (Windows 10/11+), and long-term maintainability. - Drive accessibility work, integrating Windows accessibility APIs such as UI Automation, and validating focus management, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader behavior. - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to shape UI/UX architecture and contribute to the platform roadmap. - Take features end-to-end, from concept and design through implementation, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance. - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing durable architectural fixes.
Requirements - 3+ years of professional experience building native Windows desktop applications with WinUI or similar frameworks, C#, and XAML, plus exposure to C++/Win32/WinRT/COM. - Strong grasp of Windows application architecture and managed-to-native (.NET) interop. - Demonstrated track record of shipping production desktop software with high standards for reliability and performance. - Practical experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a commitment to inclusive design. - Solid computer-science fundamentals: OOP, design patterns, data structures, memory management, and asynchronous programming. - Prior experience mentoring engineers, leading technical design reviews, and making architecture-level calls in a collaborative environment.
Nice to have - Background in automated UI testing (unit, integration, UI automation). - Performance tuning for memory footprint, startup time, rendering, high-DPI, and responsiveness. - Localization, right-to-left UI, or internationalization experience. - Familiarity with telemetry, crash reporting, and error monitoring in desktop apps. - Experience shaping CI/CD pipelines for desktop releases.
Benefits and work setup - Fully distributed team with no physical office, based in Romania. - Listed compensation range of 30,000-80,000 USD per year plus bonus and equity, depending on experience. - High-impact role defining architecture for a product used by millions. - Flat, collaborative engineering culture with autonomy over problem-solving. - Pathways into broader technical leadership such as Tech Lead or Architect. - Mission-driven environment focused on accessible, user-centered software.
