Job details
About this role
Role overview Help remove reading barriers by shaping the Windows desktop experience of a text-to-speech reading platform used by more than 50 million people. As a Senior Software Engineer based in Helsinki, you will set the technical direction for the native Windows client shipped to Windows 10 and 11 users. The role blends hands-on engineering with architectural leadership and a strong accessibility mandate within a fully remote organization.
Responsibilities - Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of native Windows desktop applications built with the Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ where needed. - Define and uphold engineering standards around performance, memory usage, responsive UI, and cross-version compatibility for Windows 10/11+. - Champion accessibility by integrating Windows accessibility APIs (for example Microsoft UI Automation), then validating focus management, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader behavior. - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and product managers to plan features, shape UI/UX direction, and steer the long-term Windows roadmap. - Own features from concept and design through release and maintenance, while diagnosing and resolving complex bugs, memory leaks, and rendering or compatibility issues.
Requirements - 3+ years of professional Windows desktop development with the Windows App SDK, WinUI or a comparable UI framework, C#, and XAML; working knowledge of C++, Win32, WinRT, or COM is a strong plus. - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture and interop between managed .NET code and native components. - Proven record of shipping production desktop software with attention to reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability. - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a clear commitment to inclusive design. - Strong fundamentals in object-oriented design, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous or multi-threaded programming. - Demonstrated ability to lead technical design, mentor engineers, run code reviews, and make architectural calls in collaboration with cross-functional partners.
Nice to have - Writing automated UI tests across unit, integration, and end-to-end layers. - Performance tuning for startup time, memory footprint, high-DPI rendering, and responsiveness under load. - Localization, right-to-left UI, and internationalization work. - Telemetry, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring in desktop apps. - Shaping CI/CD pipelines and desktop release workflows.
Benefits and work setup - Fully distributed team with no physical office; roughly 200 people collaborating remotely across regions. - Flat engineering culture with autonomy over how problems are approached and ownership of features end-to-end. - Clear pathways into technical leadership, including mentoring, tech lead, and architect tracks. - Finland-based compensation range of 30,000–100,000 USD per year, plus bonus and stock, depending on experience. - Mission-driven work centered on accessibility and helping people read more, read faster, and retain more.
