Job details
About this role
Role overview
Join a globally distributed engineering team building consumer text-to-speech software used by tens of millions of readers worldwide. The Senior Software Engineer will own the Windows desktop application, shaping its architecture and accessibility for a product line that spans mobile apps, browsers, and the web. This is a senior, hands-on technical leadership role with end-to-end ownership of native Windows development.
Responsibilities
- Lead architecture, design, and implementation of a native Windows desktop client using the Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ where required. - Establish and enforce engineering standards for performance, memory usage, responsive UI, and cross-version compatibility across Windows 10 and 11. - Drive accessibility integration through Microsoft UI Automation and related Windows accessibility frameworks, including focus management, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader support. - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to plan features, shape UI architecture, and contribute to the long-term Windows roadmap. - Own the full feature lifecycle from conception through release and ongoing maintenance, ensuring consistent quality across updates. - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and platform compatibility problems.
Requirements
- Several years of professional experience building production Windows desktop applications with the Windows App SDK, WinUI or comparable frameworks, C#, and XAML, plus working knowledge of C++ and Win32/WinRT/COM. - Deep familiarity with Windows application architecture, including managed-to-native interop with .NET. - A track record of shipping reliable, performant desktop software at scale. - Practical experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a commitment to inclusive design. - Strong computer science fundamentals, including OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous programming. - Demonstrated ability to lead technical design, mentor engineers, run code reviews, and drive architectural decisions, paired with strong cross-functional communication.
Nice to have
- Background in automated UI testing frameworks and unit or integration testing for desktop apps. - Experience optimizing startup time, memory footprint, rendering performance, and high-DPI behavior. - Familiarity with localization, RTL layouts, and regional accessibility requirements. - Hands-on work with telemetry, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring tools. - Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and release automation for desktop software.
Benefits and work setup
- A fully remote, distributed team with no physical office. - High-impact scope: the role directly defines the architecture of the Windows product used by millions. - Flat engineering culture with autonomy to choose how problems are solved and to own features end-to-end. - Clear growth path toward technical leadership, including Tech Lead or Architect tracks. - Mission-driven work focused on building reliable, accessible software that removes barriers to reading. - Netherlands-based compensation in the range of 30,000–120,000 USD per year plus bonus and equity, calibrated to experience.
