Engineering Manager, DevEx

Role overview

This Engineering Manager role leads the developer experience and services engineering function for a platform that supports tens of thousands of independent local restaurants with technology, integrations, and operational tooling. The position blends hands-on technical leadership with people management across backend systems, APIs, distributed services, and production infrastructure. It calls for a high-agency leader who can turn ambiguity into clear direction, stay close to the technology and customer, and be accountable for both team performance and the business outcomes it creates.

Responsibilities

- Partner with Product, Design, Data, and Operations to identify the most valuable problems to solve, defining success through measurable outcomes rather than projects shipped. - Guide architecture and engineering decisions across services, balancing speed, reliability, simplicity, and long-term system health. - Lead engineers working with Python, Go, and Ruby services, including APIs, distributed systems, asynchronous workflows, databases, AWS, and observability tooling. - Hire, coach, and develop engineers across experience levels, recognize future leaders, reward strong performance, and address underperformance directly. - Reduce unnecessary process, make risk visible, and use customer feedback, product data, incidents, and operational metrics to evaluate decisions. - Build strong relationships with cross-functional leaders, influence through judgment and results, and unblock the team rather than simply escalating problems.

Requirements

- Proven experience managing engineering teams that build and operate backend services, APIs, and integrations at scale. - Strong technical background with Python, Go, and/or Ruby, plus distributed systems, databases, AWS infrastructure, observability, and production operations. - Demonstrated ability to lead service migrations and improvements in reliability, security, and performance. - Comfort making decisions with incomplete information, challenging assumptions, and adapting quickly when circumstances change. - Clear, direct communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences, paired with high standards and personal accountability. - Track record of developing engineers, including those from unconventional backgrounds, and creating conditions in which teams do the best work of their careers.
