Greenhouse - Software Engineer

Role overview A roughly 12-month independent-contractor software engineering engagement focused on building and maintaining web-based products that power employer-facing talent discovery experiences. The work is execution-heavy and full-stack, with particular emphasis on OpenSearch/Elasticsearch and applying AI to matching, ranking, and search relevance.

Responsibilities - Contribute to talent matching, talent rediscovery, and related employer-facing product experiences - Build product capabilities across the stack, including backend services, APIs, data models, and modern frontend development - Design, tune, and operate search and matching systems on OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, including indexing, query design, relevance tuning, and performance work - Apply AI/ML techniques to production matching, ranking, and search-relevance features - Build and improve evaluation, observability, testing, and feedback mechanisms for search and matching systems - Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Data, and Applied ML partners in ambiguous, user-facing problem spaces - Maintain stable, performant production code and resolve bugs in the products

Requirements - 5+ years writing production software - Experience with Ruby, C#, Java, or Python, with Ruby on Rails preferred - Strong JavaScript or TypeScript fundamentals, including React - Full-stack experience across backend systems, APIs, data modeling, and modern frontend development - Production experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, including indexing, query design, relevance tuning, and performance considerations - Experience building or working with search, ranking, recommendation, or matching systems - Practical experience applying AI/ML techniques to production applications - Experience collaborating with Product and Design in ambiguous, user-facing problem spaces - Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams

Nice to have - Strong experience working with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch at scale - Experience with semantic search, embeddings, ranking, recommendation, or matching systems - Experience with analytical databases - Experience in product-focused engineering teams where engineers collaborate closely with Product, Design, Data, and ML - Strong understanding of trade-offs between relevance, latency, reliability, infrastructure cost, and user experience - Experience working in distributed or remote engineering environments
