Interaction Designer-Operator

Role overview

This contract role combines interaction design, product judgment, and client empathy to turn loosely expressed needs into working software. You will shape the experience of operational tools, product workflows, support surfaces, or implementation flows where helping users complete their jobs matters more than producing polished mockups. The work is hands-on and iterative, using AI-native tools while applying careful human judgment to the result.

Responsibilities

- Translate messy client requests and incomplete briefs into usable software interactions. - Shape workflows, defaults, empty states, progressive disclosure, copy, permissions, and handoffs around real user needs. - Prototype or build working interactions rather than stopping at static visual concepts. - Explain the reasoning behind design decisions and show how an interaction changed from intent to implementation. - Collaborate across client, product, and engineering contexts so the resulting experience can actually ship. - Use AI tools to move faster while reviewing their output for clarity, usability, and fit with the user’s job.

Requirements

- Experience designing software where workflow effectiveness and user outcomes are more important than visual polish alone. - Strong product instincts and the ability to make sound interaction decisions with incomplete information. - Client empathy: you can understand what someone is trying to accomplish even when the request is ambiguous or poorly framed. - Comfort reasoning about edge cases such as permissions, empty states, handoffs, and progressive disclosure. - Ability to turn a rough request into a working interaction and clearly articulate what changed and why. - A short walkthrough or comparable evidence showing how you used AI tools to improve a software interaction.
