Full Stack Engineer (Ruby/React)

Role overview A defense- and public safety-focused software team is hiring a Full Stack Engineer to build applications that operate in remote, disconnected, and bandwidth-limited environments. The role spans high-availability cloud infrastructure and mission-critical mobile/edge clients, requiring someone equally comfortable in frontend architecture, backend APIs, and infrastructure as code. The work directly supports operators in austere environments where reliability, security, and synchronization accuracy are non-negotiable.

Responsibilities - Design, build, and scale frontend experiences in React, emphasizing performance, modular component design, and resilience under constrained network conditions. - Architect and maintain high-throughput APIs in Ruby on Rails that serve web, desktop, and mobile clients operating in challenging connectivity scenarios. - Own database architecture on PostgreSQL, including advanced data modeling, schema migrations, query optimization, and indexing strategies for production scale. - Manage containerized infrastructure using Docker and Kubernetes, with Terraform for infrastructure-as-code provisioning, plus hardened CI/CD pipelines. - Drive engineering excellence through rigorous code reviews, design reviews before implementation, and production-ready, well-tested pull requests. - Partner with business development and field operations teams to troubleshoot escalations and keep critical user missions unblocked.

Requirements - 8+ years of professional full-stack experience building and maintaining production-grade applications at scale. - Deep expertise in Ruby (Rails or comparable frameworks) and SQL, including scalable service design and complex schema migrations. - Advanced React proficiency, including component architecture, application state management, and frontend performance tuning for high concurrency. - Deep PostgreSQL knowledge: internals, indexing, query plans, transaction management, and performance tuning. - Hands-on DevOps experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform, plus ownership of CI/CD pipelines. - Active, AI-native development workflow using tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor, with clear opinions on how AI changes code review and design.

Nice to have - Background building secure, high-availability software for defense, first responder, or public safety agencies. - Familiarity with TAK ecosystem (ATAK, WinTAK, CivTAK) and real-time geospatial data flows. - Experience with biometric data ingestion, encryption standards, and EBTS or similar compliance frameworks. - Prior work in ambiguous, fast-paced startup environments. - API design tailored for mobile clients, including versioning, offline sync, and low-bandwidth optimization. - Production experience integrating LLMs or AI-powered systems into backend workflows. - Reading-level proficiency in Kotlin, C++, C#, or Python for cross-platform integration.
