About this role

Role overview

This is a founding senior engineering position on a team tasked with unifying four mature educational content products behind a single shared discovery experience. The work centers on designing the contracts that connect those products, packaging their capabilities so they can be composed, and making search and curation behave like one coherent system rather than four. Success means faster, more intuitive workflows for administrators governing libraries, teachers finding instructional material, and students exploring learning content.

Responsibilities

- Define and own the API contracts between a libraries layer and four product surfaces, including OpenAPI interfaces, typed message schemas, and disciplined versioning that keeps breaking changes from becoming downstream outages. - Build and evolve a discovery layer spanning search, relevance ranking, and retrieval across a large, heterogeneous content catalog. - Create and maintain continuous delivery pipelines covering code, infrastructure, configuration, and data. - Shape engineering culture, security and governance practices, and contribute to open stack decisions for the team. - Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the group.

Requirements

- Substantial professional experience building and operating production backend services. - Strong proficiency in TypeScript, or strong command of a comparably typed language plus a genuine willingness to work in a strict-TypeScript codebase. - Demonstrated ownership of API contracts in multi-service systems: designing them, versioning them, and testing against them. - Cloud operations depth, including designing infrastructure (not just consuming it) and writing it as code on AWS using Terraform. - Release engineering depth, with a track record of building continuous delivery pipelines and reducing toil in build and release systems. - Effective communication across distributed engineering, product, and design teams, including the ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical audiences. - Bachelor's degree or equivalent industry experience.

Benefits and work setup

- Remote-eligible position based in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available. - Base salary range of $109,500 to $150,550, depending on experience and location, set against national market data. - Medical, prescription, dental, vision, and telehealth coverage. - Health savings and flexible spending accounts. - 401(k) and Roth 401(k) with company match. - Paid vacation and sick time, plus twelve paid holidays per year. - Parental leave totaling 20 weeks with 14 weeks paid, plus a milk-stork program. - Tuition reimbursement. - Life and disability insurance. - Well-being and employee assistance programs.
