Remote job
QA Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview A small product team is hiring a QA engineer to own quality end-to-end across a widget, a backend API, and a marketing site that together form a single user-facing product. The role combines hands-on test automation with exploratory testing and structured bug reporting, and the engineer is expected to act as a critical internal voice on where the product itself falls short.
Responsibilities - Own quality across three connected codebases (a frontend widget, an API, and a marketing site) and coordinate releases through a shared test gating process. - Write and maintain end-to-end automation suites that block broken builds from shipping. - Probe the product deliberately to surface defects, then write reproducible reports that allow engineers to fix issues without follow-up clarification. - Provide candid internal feedback on product gaps, drawing on direct experience using the same kind of tools the product is built for. - Triage and prioritize test coverage, deciding what is worth automating and what should remain manual.
Requirements - Prior QA experience on a live product with real users, with strong opinions about what makes a bug report useful versus useless. - Comfort navigating browser developer tools (console, network, sources) and reading stack traces without hesitation. - Practical ability to write test automation across different layers, including component and API tests. - Strong written communication skills, since much of the role is making problems legible to people who weren't present when they were found. - Willingness to context-switch between a Laravel backend test and a Preact component test within the same afternoon.
Nice to have - Familiarity with Playwright, Vitest, Testing Library, PHPUnit, or GitHub Actions CI pipelines. - Exposure to TypeScript, Preact with signals, Vite, Laravel on PHP 8.4, Postgres, Redis-backed queues, or Next.js and React.
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote role open to candidates based in the UK and Europe. - Small team environment offering significant influence over the product and high individual ownership of outcomes. - Hiring process designed to respect candidates' time: a short initial call followed by a paid half-day working session on a real backlog problem, with no unpaid take-home exercises or whiteboard algorithm interviews.
