Remote job
Senior Hardware Obsolescence Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview A senior engineering position focused on sustaining and modernizing safety-critical avionics hardware through board-level redesign and electronic component lifecycle management. The work centers on assessing end-of-life parts, selecting and qualifying replacements, and verifying the impact of those changes on existing certified hardware. This is a remote, U.S.-based opportunity supporting mission-critical aerospace and defense programs, requiring U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.
Responsibilities - Assess DMSMS and component lifecycle risks on existing avionics boards and recommend practical mitigation strategies, including Last Time Buy options when appropriate. - Lead board-level technology refresh efforts, including replacement part selection, schematic updates, bills of material maintenance, and coordination with PCB layout teams. - Evaluate alternate parts and design changes for electrical, functional, physical, and environmental compatibility across signal integrity, power integrity, and EMI/EMC considerations. - Analyze impacts to FPGAs, ASICs, CPLDs, PLDs, and their board-level interfaces, coordinating programmable logic changes with FPGA specialists as needed. - Support prototype bring-up, laboratory testing, troubleshooting, hardware integration, and verification of revised designs. - Prepare engineering change packages, qualification evidence, and certification-quality documentation aligned with DO-254, DO-160, ARP4754A, and ARP4761 activities.
Requirements - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline. - 10+ years of professional electrical hardware development experience, including hands-on board-level or PCB design work. - Demonstrated experience updating schematics, selecting components, maintaining bills of material, and supporting board redesign or technology refresh. - Proven track record assessing component obsolescence and qualifying replacements for existing electronic hardware. - Working knowledge of FPGA devices, digital logic, and the electrical interfaces between programmable logic and surrounding board circuitry. - Familiarity with at least one relevant interface such as ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553, Ethernet, PCIe, SPI, I²C, CAN, or UART.
Nice to have - Hands-on FPGA development or verification using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog with tools such as Vivado, Quartus, or Libero. - Experience with ASIC-, CPLD-, PLD-, or discrete-logic-to-FPGA conversion efforts. - Background developing DMSMS mitigation plans with alternate-source evaluation. - Familiarity with ARP4754A, ARP4761, or FACE architecture and standards. - Avionics program experience spanning flight displays, mission computers, navigation, flight controls, radar, engine controls, UAV/UAS platforms, or space electronics. - Master's degree in engineering or a related discipline.
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote arrangement based in the United States. - Competitive pay in the $80–$85 USD range, with final compensation based on candidate experience and certifications. - Comprehensive medical, dental, life, and disability coverage. - 401(k) with employer match, professional development support, and certification assistance. - Flexible, collaborative, people-first workplace culture.
