AI Research Engineer

Role overview

An in-house AI research group is hiring a Research Engineer to advance the science of evaluating AI systems at population scale, grounded in real human judgment. The work spans evaluation methodologies, alignment techniques, and synthetic data generation, sitting at the intersection of academic-style research and applied product impact. The role suits a self-directed researcher who can publish original work while also turning insights into scalable tools, frameworks, and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

- Lead independent research projects on AI evaluation, alignment, and synthetic data generation - Design and implement novel evaluation frameworks for large language models and agent systems that incorporate human data - Plan and run rigorous experiments studying model behavior, capabilities, and limitations - Build scalable tooling and infrastructure that converts research findings into practical applications - Publish papers and contribute open-source work that advances the wider AI research community - Partner with ML engineers, data scientists, and product teams to translate research into production systems - Mentor teammates on advanced AI concepts and emerging research directions

Requirements

- 5+ years of engineering experience with substantial AI/ML focus - Demonstrated research output through publications, open-source contributions, or other significant projects - Strong engineering fundamentals and a track record of implementing AI systems in production environments - Deep knowledge of LLM evaluation methodologies, alignment techniques, and model optimization approaches - Hands-on experience with fine-tuning, adapters, quantization, and distillation frameworks - Self-motivation to define and pursue research directions independently - Solid understanding of current challenges in AI safety, reliability, and alignment - Strong communication skills for explaining complex research concepts to diverse audiences

- Track record of contributing to the open-source ML/AI ecosystem - Experience mentoring researchers or engineers
