Role overview A senior-level System Administrator (Subject Matter Expert) opportunity supporting a large federal science agency's hybrid IT estate, spanning on-premises data centers and multi-cloud platforms. The position blends hands-on infrastructure administration with architecture advisory work, helping technical leadership plan migrations, optimize workloads, and modernize legacy systems. It is a remote, U.S.-based role suited to a seasoned technologist who operates comfortably at expert level across traditional and cloud-native environments.
Responsibilities - Administer Windows Server, Linux/UNIX (Red Hat, Ubuntu, CentOS), and macOS workloads running on enterprise hardware across multiple data centers - Manage VMware vSphere/vCenter environments, including vROPS and Log Insight, with SCVMM support where required - Operate and optimize AWS environments (EC2, S3, CloudFormation, Application Migration Service) and advise on Azure/GCP trade-offs - Lead workload migrations from on-premises infrastructure to cloud with zero-downtime cutovers, documenting runbooks and migration paths - Administer NAS/SAN storage, enterprise backup software, and Backup-to-Cloud replication for disaster recovery continuity - Apply security patches and IAVA remediation on schedule, maintain monitoring dashboards (CloudWatch, Datadog, vROPS), and respond to incidents across physical, virtual, and cloud layers - Support DevOps modernization with Kubernetes, Jenkins, Ansible, and infrastructure-as-code practices - Produce architecture diagrams, configuration records, and runbooks, collaborating via Jira, Confluence, and Microsoft Teams
Requirements - Bachelor's degree with 10 years of experience, Master's with 8, Associate's with 12, or equivalent 14 years of experience - U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance; all work performed in the U.S. - Deep VMware expertise: vCenter, ESXi/vSphere (6.x/7.x/8.x), vROPS, and Log Insight at enterprise scale - Hands-on AWS administration: EC2, S3, CloudFormation, and migration tooling - Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) and Linux (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu) administration in enterprise or federal settings - Enterprise storage administration (NAS/SAN) on Dell, HP, NetApp, or comparable hardware - Backup, replication, and disaster recovery experience, including Backup-to-Cloud designs - Active Directory, Group Policy, PKI, and enterprise IAM familiarity - Demonstrated zero-downtime upgrade and migration execution in production environments - Strong written and verbal communication for documentation and senior leadership presentations
Nice to have - AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional) or equivalent - VMware Certified Professional (VCP-DCV or VCP-VCF) or equivalent - Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Enterprise Architecture, or related field - Kubernetes and containers experience (on-premises, AWS, or bare metal) - Cloud-native AI/ML services exposure - Oracle on Linux/Red Hat experience - Team leadership or mentoring background
