Senior Software Engineer, Connectivity & API Transformation

Role overview A senior software engineer role on the connectivity and API transformation team of a WebOps platform that powers hundreds of thousands of websites and billions of monthly page views. The team owns the federated GraphQL supergraph, the service-to-service networking layer, the workflow orchestration layer that runs customer-facing automation, and the ongoing decomposition of a legacy Python monolith into well-bounded modern services.

Responsibilities - Build and evolve a unified federated GraphQL supergraph (Grafbase, Federation v2) and the Go subgraphs behind it - Shape how services find and reach each other, including VPC and network architecture, service discovery, and connectivity standards - Decompose a large legacy Python monolith into well-bounded services and own the Cassandra data layer, including replication, backup, and disaster recovery - Design and operate workflow orchestration at platform scale, using GCP Workflows, Pub/Sub-driven job execution, and Go services on Cloud Run - Set GraphQL, gRPC, and REST standards that other engineering teams build against - Own production systems through SLOs, incident resolution, and balancing delivery speed against reliability - Participate in on-call and alert response rotations - Mentor engineers through design feedback and code review

Requirements - Significant experience building and operating production services in Go, plus the adaptability to work across a polyglot codebase that includes Rust and Python - Experience designing APIs that other teams depend on, with judgment about schema design, versioning, and backward compatibility across GraphQL, gRPC, or REST at scale - Experience with large-scale, high-traffic distributed systems and designing scalable, robust services - Background carving services out of a monolith or incrementally evolving a legacy system without downtime - Working knowledge of cloud networking fundamentals, including VPCs, DNS, load balancing, and service-to-service authentication - Experience with Kubernetes and a major cloud provider, ideally GCP - Familiarity with observability tooling such as Grafana Cloud, Prometheus, and OpenTelemetry - Experience supporting live sites and participating in on-call rotations - Clear communication skills and a collaborative, mentorship-oriented mindset

Nice to have - Hands-on experience with GraphQL Federation, a federation gateway or router (Grafbase, Apollo, Hive), or a schema registry - Working knowledge of Rust - Experience with Cassandra or other stateful datastores in production, including backups, DR, and multi-region replication - Experience migrating off end-of-life language runtimes - Hands-on experience with private service networking or a service mesh, including Shared VPC, VPC peering, Private Service Connect, internal DNS, Istio, or Envoy - Familiarity with GCP Workflows, Pub/Sub, Cloud Run, Cloud Build, AlloyDB, MySQL, Redis, Docker, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, and Vault - Working knowledge of WordPress or Drupal
