Remote job
Hot Cell Design Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview Design mechanical and integrated systems for remotely operated radiological hot cells used in used nuclear fuel processing. The work spans shielding, confinement, ventilation, material movement, and remote handling, with close coordination across engineering and safety disciplines to support a safe, maintainable facility.
Responsibilities - Lead or contribute to hot cell mechanical and systems design, including shielding, ventilation, confinement, and remote handling. - Plan equipment layouts, material transfer routes, and access for maintenance. - Work with radiation modeling and safety specialists to define shielding needs and design constraints. - Integrate manipulators, cameras, cranes, and other remote handling equipment into the cell design. - Coordinate with structural, HVAC, instrumentation, process, and other engineering teams; support structural reviews of confinement systems and hazard requirements. - Contribute to failure mode and hazard analyses, safety assessments, design reviews, procurement specifications, and installation plans; support prototyping, testing, and commissioning.
Requirements - Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related discipline. - At least five years of experience in radiological facility design, glovebox or hot cell engineering, or radiological material handling. - Working knowledge of remote handling systems, robotics, or manipulator technologies. - Understanding of radiation shielding, criticality safety, and radiological protection standards. - Strong systems thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collaborate across engineering, licensing, and safety teams. - Clear written and verbal communication skills.
Nice to have - Hot cell experience in nuclear fuel cycle, isotope production, or defense settings; proficiency with CAD tools and engineering drawing standards; or knowledge of nuclear facility regulations and standards. - Hands-on mockup, prototyping, or commissioning experience, plus vendor coordination or project management.
