Senior System Software Engineer, Software-Defined Networking
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Lead the design and operation of software-defined networking for large-scale GPU cloud infrastructure supporting AI workloads, cloud services, and accelerated applications. The role covers control-plane and data-plane architecture, Kubernetes networking, production software, reliability engineering, performance analysis, and incident response. It combines deep systems programming with technical leadership, cross-team architecture work, and operational ownership.
Responsibilities
- Define and evolve secure, multi-tenant networking architecture using Open vSwitch, OVN, OpenFlow, overlays, and related control-plane technologies. - Develop and review production software for Kubernetes networking, network plugins, distributed control planes, Linux host networking, virtual machines, and network automation. - Drive integration and lifecycle improvements covering flow behavior, configuration, upgrades, interoperability, performance, recovery, and large-scale operation. - Translate infrastructure requirements into APIs, orchestration services, component boundaries, state models, compatibility plans, and delivery roadmaps. - Build automated unit, integration, system, performance, scale, and upgrade tests connected to CI/CD and release qualification. - Establish observability and operational objectives for reliability, performance, security, and resource efficiency; participate in on-call support and lead incident investigations. - Mentor engineers through design and code reviews, implementation guidance, production-readiness decisions, and improvements to engineering standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience. - At least 12 years designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining production software in both C and Go; experience with Bash and Python for automation or diagnostics. - Hands-on experience developing, integrating, and troubleshooting Open vSwitch and OVN, including OpenFlow and control-plane/data-plane behavior. - Production Kubernetes networking experience covering CNIs, network policy, node and pod traffic paths, plugins, upgrades, and failure modes. - Strong Linux networking fundamentals, including IP, TCP, UDP, routing, switching, overlays, tunneling, namespaces, and policy. - Experience architecting distributed systems with secure APIs, state management, consistency, scalability, compatibility, and failure handling. - Experience with production lifecycle practices including automated testing, deployments, upgrades, observability, performance analysis, and incident response.
Nice to have
Contributions to Open vSwitch, OVN, OVN-Kubernetes, Kubernetes networking, or another relevant open-source project; experience with GPU-cloud or accelerated virtualization technologies such as SR-IOV, RDMA, SmartNICs, DPUs, NFV, KVM/QEMU, or container runtimes; and experience building secure high-performance gRPC or REST services.
