Associate Software Engineer - Java (Distributed Systems and Databases)

Role overview A distributed systems team building a proprietary telemetry database is hiring an engineer to contribute to the data ingest, storage, and query layers that power a SaaS observability platform. The role centers on Java-based, high-throughput services handling millions of messages per second across exabytes of stored data. Team members share an on-call pager rotation and take end-to-end ownership of service quality and reliability.

Responsibilities - Design and develop new features focused on throughput, latency, and efficiency - Collaborate with engineers to deliver scalable distributed solutions and improve application performance - Proactively identify and remediate reliability risks in production services - Participate in the shared pager rotation, responding to incidents and preventing recurrences - Balance new feature delivery with operational stability improvements

Requirements - 2+ years of professional experience in distributed SaaS software development - Strong proficiency in Java, with solid command of algorithms and data structures - Deeper understanding of distributed systems trade-offs and failure modes - Comfort using the command line to investigate, manage, and fix issues - Hands-on experience with databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Redis, or MongoDB - Familiarity with at least one public cloud (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and with Kubernetes or Docker - Strong Computer Science fundamentals

Nice to have - Networking and load-balancing expertise applied to low-latency, high-throughput systems - Familiarity with modern observability and alerting patterns - Debugging experience using tools like Java Flight Recorder - Prior success collaborating asynchronously within distributed teams across regions
