Role overview

This staff-level design position sits within a large in-house product design organisation (115+ designers, researchers, and brand practitioners) at a UK digital bank. The role focuses on shaping long-term design vision, leading end-to-end projects in ambiguous problem spaces, and raising the craft benchmark across the broader design discipline.

Responsibilities

- Define long-range design direction and lead complex, ambiguous end-to-end initiatives that span wide product areas - Navigate strategic tradeoffs and partner with cross-functional leaders to turn organisational goals into actionable plans - Champion design craft and product excellence, setting a quality benchmark that influences teams across the company - Proactively tackle systemic challenges, reduce complexity, and create better conditions for squads to ship impactful work - Act as a visible ambassador for design, sharing work and its impact widely to keep design central to how the company builds - Mentor designers across the discipline, fostering a culture of growth, collaboration, and belonging

Requirements

- Deep expertise in a specific design discipline, combined with strong foundational skills across the full product design surface - Track record of delivering high-impact design work that influences customer outcomes, company metrics, and commercial goals - Excellent visual, UI, and interaction design skills, with the ability to reason through complex interaction patterns - Comfort thriving in fast-changing, ambiguous environments while maintaining a high bar for quality - Strategic mindset with the ability to shape product direction across multiple areas and translate it into clear plans - Strong cross-functional collaborator; resilient, pragmatic, and effective communicator, with a passion for growing the design team
