About this role
Role overview A Senior Engineering Manager position leading a manager-of-managers organisation of roughly 20–30 engineers across multiple cross-functional squads. The role partners closely with Product, Design, Data and Engineering leaders to shape technical direction, grow new teams, and deliver on mission-driven outcomes within a digital banking platform that spans current accounts, business banking, savings, investments, pensions and credit products.
Responsibilities - Lead, coach and develop 2–3 Engineering Managers along with Tech Leads and senior engineers through regular 1:1s and continuous feedback - Take accountability for delivery and execution across multiple squads, partnering with Technical Leads and Product Managers to ship outcomes - Raise and uphold the bar for engineering and operational excellence, including technical quality, reliability and individual growth - Drive technical influence by partnering with senior engineers on initiatives that improve engineering practices organisation-wide - Build strong stakeholder relationships across teams and protect focus time so engineers can do their best work - Contribute to wider engineering standards, hiring processes and managerial best practice across the organisation
Requirements - Strong technical and delivery background with prior experience working as a software engineer - Demonstrated experience directly managing 2–3 Engineering Managers and leading organisations of around 20 engineers - Track record of taking accountability for delivery across squads in collaboration with technical and product leadership - Ability to foster a high engineering bar, articulate clear expectations and develop engineering talent - Skill in shaping, organising and challenging teams to deliver against mission objectives - Comfort partnering with senior engineers on technical initiatives and contributing to organisation-wide practices
Nice to have - Experience scaling teams, growing new squads and evolving organisational design in a fast-growing product environment - Familiarity with autonomous, mission-driven team structures and shallow line management hierarchies
