About this role

Role overview

Engineering Director role leading a distributed engineering organisation that supports the European expansion of a digital banking business. The position spans multiple markets including the UK, Spain, and remote locations, and partners horizontally across product, design, data, research, operations, risk, compliance, and executive leadership to launch and scale banking products across new geographies. It is a senior leadership role centred on organisational influence, strategic alignment, and building the foundations for multi-market growth rather than owning a single product area.

Responsibilities

- Lead a distributed engineering organisation spanning multiple squads, markets, and countries, while developing Engineering Managers, Senior Engineering Managers, and senior technical leaders. - Partner with product, design, data, research, operations, risk, and compliance leaders to define and execute the European strategy. - Drive alignment and execution across many internal collectives so that European markets receive the capabilities they need to succeed. - Shape how the business approaches market expansion, localisation, regulatory requirements, and multi-market product development. - Influence priorities and outcomes across teams that do not directly report to the role. - Design and evolve organisational structures, operating models, and planning processes that enable effective scaling across Europe. - Help identify and validate product–market fit in new markets, balancing short-term delivery with long-term strategic investment.

Requirements

- Experience leading large engineering organisations through other leaders, including Engineering Managers, Senior Engineering Managers, and senior individual contributors. - A track record of operating in highly complex organisations where outcomes depend on collaboration across many teams and functions. - Strong ability to build relationships and influence outcomes without direct authority. - Comfort navigating ambiguity and creating clarity where goals, ownership, or priorities are not yet fully defined. - Experience scaling organisations through periods of rapid growth, organisational change, or market expansion.

Benefits and work setup

- Base salary of £170,000–£225,000 plus equity and benefits. - Hybrid or fully remote within the UK with ad hoc meetings in the London tech hub; relocation support and visa sponsorship are available. - Flexible working hours, with core-hours meetings to support work–life balance. - Annual learning budget of £1,000 for books, training courses, and conferences. - Commitment to equal opportunity employment with support for diverse candidates.
