Engineering Manager

Role overview Lead a full-stack engineering team building distributed, API-first systems on AWS at a remote-first homeowners insurance company. This player-coach role combines meaningful hands-on coding with leadership, guiding the decomposition of monolithic systems into modular services while driving reliable delivery and architectural quality.

Responsibilities - Lead and develop a full-stack engineering team, fostering ownership, accountability, and continuous growth. - Act as a hands-on player-coach, contributing meaningful production code while setting technical direction. - Drive roadmap initiatives from concept through production with predictable, high-quality execution. - Champion API-first design and schema-first development practices, including OpenAPI/Swagger, contract testing, and interface-driven development. - Guide decomposition of monolithic systems into modular, distributed services with clear ownership boundaries. - Establish best practices for observability, resilience, and distributed communication, including tracing, retries, idempotency, and error handling. - Lead architectural discussions to ensure long-term maintainability, reliability, and performance. - Partner cross-functionally with Product, PMO, and other engineering teams to align technical strategy with business priorities. - Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring to strengthen the engineering organization.

Requirements - Proven experience leading full-stack engineering teams across front-end and back-end systems. - Hands-on technical depth to contribute meaningful production code in addition to managing. - Track record of guiding systems evolution from monolithic toward modular, distributed service architectures. - Strong familiarity with API-first and schema-first development practices, including OpenAPI/Swagger and contract testing. - Experience establishing observability and resilience patterns such as tracing, retries, idempotency, and error handling. - Ability to partner effectively with Product and cross-functional stakeholders.

Nice to have - Insurance or other regulated industry background. - Experience scaling engineering teams during periods of rapid product growth. - Comfort balancing near-term delivery with long-term architectural investments.
