Junior Backend Engineer (Europe)

Role overview

Join a small, fast-moving engineering team building professional-grade AI systems for the commercial insurance industry. As a Junior Backend Engineer working fully remotely from Europe, you will contribute to the backend services and data pipelines that power software used daily by underwriting teams. The work sits at the intersection of software engineering and applied AI, with hands-on ownership of production systems from day one.

Responsibilities

- Build and improve backend services that ingest, process, and reason over large volumes of structured and unstructured data, including documents, third-party sources, and model outputs - Contribute to data and machine learning pipelines that support the underwriting product - Help design, build, test, and operate production systems at scale - Collaborate closely with full-stack, backend, machine learning, and platform engineers - Take ownership of features end to end, from design through shipping

Requirements

- Approximately one year of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production systems - Strong fundamentals in at least one programming language, plus working knowledge of Python - A degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience - Enjoyment of writing software and solving non-trivial technical problems - Comfort working with ambiguity, taking ownership, and moving quickly with high standards - Appreciation for direct feedback, merit-based recognition, and transparent communication

- Curiosity about AI, data, and real-world applications of machine learning - Interest in insurance, decision-support systems, or document understanding
