Backend Engineer (Europe)

Role overview

A small applied AI team working on decision tools for commercial insurance underwriters is hiring a backend engineer to own core production systems. The work spans backend services, data pipelines, and machine learning infrastructure that ingest and reason over large volumes of structured and unstructured information, including documents, third-party sources, and model outputs. It is a hands-on engineering role with end-to-end ownership and direct impact on a product already serving real insurers.

Responsibilities

- Design, build, and operate backend services that power AI-driven products used by commercial underwriters - Develop and maintain data and machine learning pipelines that process documents, third-party feeds, and model outputs at scale - Build data-driven microservices exposed through RESTful APIs - Work with AWS infrastructure, including EC2, Lambda, and other asynchronous or serverless patterns - Shape how production systems are designed, tested, and operated, in collaboration with full-stack, ML, and platform engineers - Take end-to-end ownership of systems from architecture through deployment and ongoing reliability

Requirements

- Three or more years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production systems - Strong proficiency in Python, with solid fundamentals in at least one additional programming language - Practical experience with relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL - Hands-on work with AWS, including asynchronous or serverless workflows - Ability to design and build data-driven microservices using RESTful APIs - A degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

- Curiosity about AI, data, and real-world applications of machine learning - Comfort owning ambiguous problems and moving quickly when requirements are not yet fully defined - Appreciation for direct feedback, merit-based evaluation, and transparent communication
