Senior Electrical Engineer, High Voltage

Role overview

This senior engineering position leads end-to-end technical execution for high-voltage switchyards, substations, and medium-voltage collection systems serving utility-scale solar PV and battery energy storage facilities. The role spans the full project lifecycle—from early development through financing, construction, commissioning, and into operations—acting as the central authority for engineering decisions tied to utility interconnections. The successful candidate combines deep technical depth in HV substation design and power system studies with elite program management capability.

Responsibilities

- Direct the technical program for HV substations and switchyards (115kV–500kV), ensuring designs strictly adhere to interconnecting utility standards and specifications - Serve as the primary technical liaison among internal teams, utilities, EPCs, and equipment vendors across design approvals, applications, and switchyard handover - Develop and maintain Divisions of Responsibility matrices that clarify technical boundaries and delivery schedules between the project owner, EPCs, and interconnecting utilities - Audit program health continuously to surface engineering or execution gaps and deploy countermeasures that keep energization and handover on schedule and on budget - Manage the utility interconnection scope, including technical reviews of applications, steady-state and dynamic models, and negotiations with ISOs and regional utilities - Witness and evaluate FAT/SAT, commissioning, and energization activities while contributing to engineering standards, EPC exhibits, testing protocols, and Independent Engineer diligence

Requirements

- 12 or more years leading technical scope for HV substations (345kV–500kV) and MV collection systems within an IPP, utility, EPC, or engineering firm - Demonstrated experience directing EPCs, engineers of record, consultants, major equipment vendors, and cross-functional teams across the full project lifecycle - Solid foundation in power system studies with hands-on familiarity with steady-state modeling tools such as ETAP, SKM, DIgSILENT, CDEGS, or Aspen - Working knowledge of FACTS and series compensation, including fixed series capacitors and SVC for HV transmission lines - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field; PE license highly preferred - Familiarity with NEC, NESC, and IEEE codes and standards, plus advanced Excel skills for technical and financial analysis

Nice to have

- Master's or PhD in a relevant engineering discipline - Direct experience supporting NERC, CAISO, or ERCOT compliance and technical negotiations
