Lead Mobile Engineer (Contractor)
Job details
About this role
Role overview Take senior technical ownership of mobile engineering across an existing Android app and a new iOS app, initially aimed at iPads used in field operations. This hands-on contractor role includes deciding whether Kotlin Multiplatform is a good fit, strengthening offline reliability, and setting architecture and engineering standards across both platforms.
Responsibilities - Assess Kotlin Multiplatform for sharing business logic between Android and iOS, then lead and communicate a clear recommendation. - Design and build the first iOS application, with an initial focus on iPad workflows, while contributing to and reviewing the existing Kotlin Android app. - Improve offline-first behavior through local data storage, background synchronization, conflict handling, and dependable photo capture and upload under weak connectivity. - Build mobile experiences involving maps, location, and in-app navigation. - Set cross-platform engineering standards through architecture guidance, code reviews, and mentorship. - Work closely with backend, product, design, and QA partners, communicating decisions clearly in a distributed environment.
Requirements - Senior or staff-level experience, with at least eight years in software engineering. - Strong mobile engineering judgment and experience shaping architecture across iOS and Android. - Ability to build reliable offline workflows, including data persistence and synchronization in challenging network conditions. - Strong written and verbal English communication, with an async-friendly approach and consistent overlap with U.S. working hours. - Comfortable owning technical decisions, handling ambiguity, mentoring others, and weighing new technologies against practical needs.
Nice to have - Production Android experience, Firebase or Firestore, camera or photo capture, or on-device vision and machine learning. - Background in logistics, field service, or business software.
Benefits and work setup This is a contractor engagement, not full-time employment. It is remote for candidates in Eastern Europe or Latin America, with regular overlap with U.S. working hours required.
