Job details
About this role
Role overview An infrastructure engineering role within a small platform craft team powering a regulated UK bank's banking-as-a-service backbone. The position owns the systems, tooling, and automation underpinning a highly resilient platform used by fintechs and product-led companies across payments, remittance, payroll, wealth, and beyond. It is a fully remote UK role with a focus on operational resilience, hybrid-cloud evolution, and deep collaboration with senior technical leadership.
Responsibilities - Manage the bank's infrastructure across public cloud and self-hosted hardware in third-party data centers. - Operate and evolve FoundationDB clusters, including tooling for hitless upgrades. - Manage Kubernetes clusters, infrastructure as code in Pulumi and CDK, the Bazel build farm, and the CI-to-production deployment pipeline. - Drive operational resilience through replica clusters, multi-region failover, and chaos engineering. - Own areas such as access control, CI pipelines, observability tooling, and cloud spend optimization.
Requirements - Strong experience with Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, and cloud environments. - Comfort with at least one of the team's core languages: TypeScript (preferred for IaC), with Clojure and Rust used for selected tooling. - Background in operating distributed databases or similar high-availability systems. - A mindset that prioritizes observability, maintainability, and scalability over premature optimization. - Ability to write RFCs, build proof-of-concepts, and validate approaches before committing to a build.
Nice to have - Experience with FoundationDB or other strongly consistent distributed databases. - Familiarity with Bazel build systems, DataDog, CircleCI, or global HTTP routing layers. - Exposure to regulated or financial services environments and their compliance expectations.
Benefits and work setup - Competitive base salary plus share options in the company. - Remote-first working across the UK, with a small London office available for those who want it; up to 20 days per year working remotely from abroad. - 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays and a winter shutdown between Christmas and New Year. - Pension auto-enrolment, private medical cover including family, and life insurance. - Coaching and therapy sessions, enhanced parental leave, an AI tools subscription, and a WFH setup allowance. - Note: as this is a bank role, the offer is subject to satisfactory background, right-to-work, and reference screening.
