Role overview A senior engineering role focused on grid interconnection studies and the application of AI-driven automation to modernize how those studies are performed. The position combines deep power systems analysis with stakeholder engagement, helping utilities, developers, and regulators move interconnection timelines forward for data centers and inverter-based renewable generation.
Responsibilities - Lead and execute load and generation interconnection studies, covering steady-state, short-circuit, and dynamic analyses using industry-standard commercial tools. - Establish methodology and tooling for dynamics and short-circuit duty studies, selecting cost-effective approaches for the engineering function. - Build power flow and stability models to assess system impacts of new interconnections, including data center loads and renewable generation resources. - Act as a technical subject-matter expert for the engineering team, advising on study methodology and interconnection process questions. - Translate planning-side capacity assessments into operational approaches that utilities can actually implement. - Engage directly with utility planners, project managers, developers, and regulators, presenting study results and process recommendations. - Evaluate interconnection options, system upgrades, and Grid-Enhancing Technologies, providing clear recommendations to stakeholders. - Partner with AI and automation teams to streamline study workflows and improve analytical accuracy.
Requirements - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a Power Systems focus; master's or PhD preferred. - 10+ years of experience in power system studies, transmission planning, or interconnection work at a utility or consulting firm. - At least two years of hands-on experience specifically running interconnection studies. - Proficiency with commercial power system software such as PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld, PSCAD, PowerGEM TARA, or ASPEN. - Strong coding ability in Python (or equivalent), including experience with power system tool APIs. - Working knowledge of FERC, NERC, and ISO/RTO interconnection processes and standards. - Background working with or for a utility transmission planning or interconnection team. - Understanding of steady-state and dynamic load modeling requirements. - Excellent communication and collaboration skills suited to a fast-paced, client-facing environment.
Nice to have - Interconnection process experience across multiple regions, particularly ERCOT/Texas, the Midwest, or the Southeast. - Applied experience with machine-learning and AI techniques for power system studies. - Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and deploying power system applications in the cloud. - Comfort with version control (git) and writing well-documented, tested, maintainable code.
