Commissioning Network Engineer I

Role overview Execute the direct provisioning, testing, and operational validation of a growing service-provider network as an L2 Commissioning Engineer. The role sits between physical installation and high-level architecture, translating network designs into live operational environments by working directly with routers, switches, optical gear, and firewalls across data centers, regional points of presence, and subscriber access sites.

Responsibilities - Apply baseline configurations, update firmware, and initialize new routers, switches, firewalls, and optical network elements - Perform link integrity checks, fiber light-level validation with optical power meters or OTDR review, and RFC 2544 or Y.1564 throughput testing on newly turned-up circuits - Complete site acceptance forms, update asset and IP address management tools, and document final physical and logical topologies - Resolve immediate L2 commissioning failures such as misconfigured optics, duplex or speed mismatches, incorrect VLAN assignments, and broken routing adjacencies - Direct on-site field technicians through physical cabling checks, serial console connections, transceiver swaps, and patch panel mapping - Escalate complex architectural, multi-vendor software, or upstream carrier issues to L3 engineers or vendor support teams

Requirements - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience - Two years of experience in network operations, deployment, field engineering, or NOC/SOC technical support - Experience executing scheduled maintenance windows and following strict change management procedures - Working knowledge of IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, VLANs, LACP, static routing, and OSPF - Practical experience staging and configuring enterprise or service-provider network gear on platforms such as NX-OS, Juniper Junos, Nokia SR-OS or OLT, or Arista EOS - Familiarity with network utilities such as ping, traceroute, and MTR, basic ethernet or optical test sets, and running pre-built Ansible playbooks or Jinja2 templates

Nice to have - High discipline in following step-by-step method-of-procedure documents and change control windows without unapproved shortcuts - Clear verbal and written communication for coordinating with field technicians, project managers, and operational teams - Willingness to work scheduled off-peak maintenance windows and occasional regional travel
