About this role
Role overview
Own the first dedicated product management function for software that helps legal professionals deliver services and enables clients to work with them. This is a hands-on individual contributor role focused on understanding real workflows, identifying the highest-impact problems, and taking improvements from discovery through launch. You will work closely with attorneys, clients, founders, product operations, and engineering in an early-stage environment where priorities can evolve quickly.
Responsibilities
- Observe attorneys and speak with clients to understand service breakdowns, workflow friction, and the role software plays in each problem. - Convert interviews, support requests, usage data, and workflow observations into a prioritized backlog with clear tradeoffs among bugs, usability improvements, and new capabilities. - Lead features from problem definition through delivery by scoping solutions, writing requirements and acceptance criteria, and partnering with engineering. - Use product judgment, wireframes, or lightweight prototypes to test ideas and simplify complex professional workflows. - Test releases, identify edge cases, coordinate launches, and follow up with users to verify that changes solve the intended problem. - Measure outcomes such as turnaround time, manual effort, client handoffs, and communication quality, then use the evidence to guide future priorities. - Keep founders, engineers, product operations, and legal teams aligned on decisions, sequencing, and expectations.
Requirements
- At least three years of product management experience building software with an engineering team. - Demonstrated ownership of products or features from discovery to launch, with the ability to explain measurable or observable results. - Strong product judgment, prioritization skills, execution discipline, and attention to quality. - User research ability and empathy for people performing complicated or document-heavy work. - Clear writing and communication skills across technical, operational, and professional-service audiences. - Technical fluency with APIs, integrations, data flows, and limitations of AI-powered products; software engineering experience is not required. - Comfort making progress amid ambiguity, incomplete information, and changing priorities.
Nice to have
- Experience building internal tools, operations software, service-delivery products, or complex professional workflows. - Experience with AI products, including reliability evaluation, user trust, and decisions about human oversight. - Familiarity with analytics, SQL, prototyping tools, or AI-assisted coding tools. - Background in a startup or in legal, financial, or other document-intensive environments; legal training is not required.
Benefits and work setup
- Opportunity to work directly with the professionals and clients who use the product and to shape the organization’s product practices as it grows. - Market-competitive compensation and equity are offered. - Offices are available in San Francisco and New York City, with remote work considered for a strong candidate. - The team works with urgency while generally keeping weekends free.
