Role overview
A senior engineering leader is needed to head a backend platform team responsible for the core distributed systems that power a benefits technology platform. The role combines people management, technical strategy, and operational ownership, with explicit attention to how AI-assisted development is integrated safely into production systems. The position partners closely with product, security, and customer-facing engineering teams to scale infrastructure that supports hundreds of enterprise customers and millions of end users.
Responsibilities
- Own the strategy, roadmap, and quarterly OKRs for backend platform services, balancing scalability, reliability, and security with broader business outcomes. - Lead architecture decisions for distributed services, APIs, and shared infrastructure that other engineering teams build on. - Manage, hire, and coach a team of backend engineers, fostering an inclusive culture and investing in durable skills such as first-principles debugging, problem framing, and architectural judgment. - Set the bar for engineering quality, including review standards and verification practices for AI-assisted code before it reaches production. - Own the operational model for platform reliability, including uptime, SLOs, incident response, on-call, and postmortems. - Define platform health metrics and create processes to absorb ad hoc infrastructure requests without disrupting the team's delivery cadence.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience directly managing software engineers, including experience leading a platform, infrastructure, or backend systems team. - 10+ years of experience developing backend software, with deep expertise in distributed systems, APIs, and service-oriented architecture. - Demonstrated success building and scaling large, complex distributed systems in production environments. - Hands-on experience owning platform reliability, including SLAs/SLOs, incident management, observability, and on-call practices. - Track record of developing engineering talent through hiring, coaching, and performance management. - Ability to partner effectively across Product, Security, and other Engineering teams in a fast-paced, ambiguous setting.
