Software Engineer (FedD105)

Role overview

A mid to senior level engineering role focused on modernizing legacy, on-premises software into a cloud-native platform serving a U.S. federal government client. The position centers on designing and building scalable data pipelines and distributed services while partnering closely with analysts, architects, platform engineers, and external stakeholders. U.S. citizenship is required, and the work supports mission-critical defense systems in a fully remote, asynchronous environment with limited on-site expectations.

Responsibilities

- Translate ambiguous product and mission requirements into concrete technical designs in partnership with data architects, analysts, and stakeholders. - Design, build, and maintain complex ETL/ELT pipelines that ingest, transform, and load data from diverse sources using cloud-native tooling. - Refactor monolithic, on-prem systems into independently deployable microservices with lightweight APIs and modern orchestration patterns. - Implement authentication, authorization, identity management, and RBAC/ABAC frameworks to protect sensitive data and enforce compliance. - Drive engineering best practices around microservice design, automated testing, observability, and CI/CD pipelines. - Produce comprehensive documentation, participate in architectural reviews and code reviews, and mentor other engineers.

Requirements

- Three or more years (mid) or five or more years (senior) of professional software engineering experience. - Expert-level proficiency in at least one modern language such as Go, TypeScript, or Python, with a track record of writing idiomatic, testable code. - Strong knowledge of system design, relational database modeling, indexing, query optimization, and modern API development beyond basic CRUD. - Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure and orchestration tooling such as Argo Workflows. - Demonstrated success decomposing a complex application into small services that communicate via RESTful or similar APIs. - Practical experience implementing authorization, data governance, security telemetry, and policy enforcement across enterprise systems.

Nice to have

- Familiarity with Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or Pulumi, GitOps practices, and CNCF ecosystem projects. - Background in Department of Defense software acquisition or sustainment modernization efforts.
