Role overview
This year-long, entry-level fellowship supports public-interest research on capital punishment through data management, analysis, writing, and visualization. The fellow will maintain a complex case database, help turn research into accessible reporting, and collaborate with staff and interns on time-sensitive information projects.
Responsibilities
- Research, verify, correct, and update records concerning death sentences, executions, and related developments. - Analyze datasets and use descriptive statistics to support reports, web content, and other public-facing materials. - Create and maintain data visualizations for digital and print communications. - Coordinate with staff and interns on research projects and new data collection. - Help respond to media and other information requests with accurate, clearly explained findings. - Write blog posts summarizing developments in relevant cases and policy debates.
Requirements
- Commitment to racial equity and social justice. - Strong research skills and the ability to explain complex information clearly in writing and visual formats. - Experience using Microsoft Excel. - Ability to learn unfamiliar tools independently, troubleshoot problems, and adapt to new technologies. - Ability to work both independently and collaboratively while managing short- and long-term projects.
Nice to have
- Education or experience in social science, journalism, criminal justice, data science, public policy, statistics, or a related field. - Familiarity with capital punishment, the criminal legal system, or legal research. - Experience with Tableau, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, large datasets, data journalism, databases, SQL, or advanced Excel features such as pivot tables and formulas.
Benefits and work setup
The position offered a salary of $47,700 plus retirement matching, health, dental, and vision insurance, paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave. Tableau training was available. The role could be performed remotely, with a preference for candidates able to work in a hybrid office environment in Washington, DC.
