Remote job
Senior Backend PHP Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview Own complex backend systems that support bookings, where data correctness, concurrency, and reliability are critical. Working alongside a technical lead, the senior engineer will have substantial autonomy over architecture and direction, and will help operate a large, multi-tenant booking platform in production.
Responsibilities - Design and maintain backend services and domain logic in a substantial PHP codebase, with responsibility for data integrity and scale. - Model and tune relational databases: improve indexes and queries, investigate slow-query plans, and carry out safe migrations on large tables. - Maintain correct caching across shared objects, transient data, distributed locks, and tenant boundaries. - Handle concurrency risks, including race conditions, idempotency, background jobs, and failure recovery. - Investigate production issues using logs and profiling tools, including problems tied to real data shapes or incomplete migrations. - Own difficult work with limited hand-holding, verify changes, and use AI tools to support delivery while applying independent engineering judgment.
Requirements - Strong PHP backend engineering skills and experience working in a large, service-oriented codebase. - Deep MySQL or MariaDB knowledge, including data modeling, indexing, query tuning, and large-table migrations. - Strong understanding of caching correctness, concurrency, race conditions, idempotency, and background processing. - Experience diagnosing production problems using logs and profiling, and reasoning about failure modes. - High ownership and the ability to independently verify work before considering it complete. - Comfortable using AI development tools to speed up engineering work.
Nice to have - Experience with high-concurrency or limited-inventory systems, such as ticketing, payments, travel, or marketplaces. - Background with large multi-tenant applications, modular architectures, and MySQL/MariaDB or Redis at scale. - Familiarity with AWS infrastructure, payment processor integrations, SAML or identity providers, and React or TypeScript.
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote, with core collaboration hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time across U.S. and Latin American time zones. - Small team, rapid delivery cycles, and meaningful ownership of architecture and production systems.
