Remote job
Senior Design Engineer, Design Systems
Job details
About this role
Role overview
This senior design-engineering role will establish and scale a production design system spanning Figma and frontend code. The work connects product design and engineering by defining the system’s foundations, building reusable interface components, improving consistency and accessibility, and creating tools that help teams prototype and ship high-quality experiences more efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Define the system architecture across design and code, including primitives, tokens, components, patterns, and key user flows. - Build production-ready components that account for states, interactions, motion, responsiveness, and accessibility. - Keep Figma libraries, frontend implementation, and Storybook documentation aligned as the system evolves. - Set quality standards and guide teams toward interfaces that are consistent, usable, accessible, flexible, and maintainable. - Develop AI-enabled tooling, skills, documentation, and rules that help designers and engineers use the system correctly. - Work with product managers, designers, and engineers to resolve complex workflow and edge-case requirements.
Requirements
- Six or more years of experience building production frontend design systems used across multiple web and mobile surfaces. - Strong frontend engineering ability with modern web technologies and component-based architecture, including comfort working in established codebases. - Excellent UI and UX judgment, with a high standard for visual polish, usability, accessibility, flexibility, and maintainability. - Deep experience with component libraries, design tokens, Storybook, visual regression workflows, and Figma libraries or plugins. - Strong accessibility fundamentals across mobile and web products. - Experience creating or consolidating design systems and connecting design libraries with production code. - Practical experience using AI to accelerate prototyping, component development, and design-system work. - Clear communication, sound judgment under ambiguity, and a bias toward building, testing, and iterating in code. - A portfolio or body of work demonstrating shipped impact across interface systems, prototypes, production UI, and documentation.
Nice to have
- Experience with two-sided marketplaces or products serving interdependent user groups. - Background designing for healthcare, operationally complex products, or other high-stakes domains.
Benefits and work setup
- The role is open to remote work within the United States, with preference for candidates in the San Francisco Bay Area.
