Sr Software Engineer - Storybook

Role overview Help guide the development of a widely used tool for building, testing, and documenting user interface components. As a core maintainer, you’ll shape its APIs and support emerging workflows that help AI agents work with existing components, preview changes, and run tests. The role combines hands-on engineering with open collaboration and developer education.

Responsibilities - Contribute to the tool’s codebase and design, develop, and refine APIs for users, addon authors, and maintainers. - Triage issues, review pull requests, support contributors, and write or review technical proposals. - Learn how developers use the tool and create educational content about new features. - Share ideas with the developer community; conference speaking may be an option. - Coordinate with other engineering teams to maintain continuity across related products. - Take part in a support rotation, primarily during business hours.

Requirements - At least five years building for the web with JavaScript, TypeScript, or a relevant language. - Experience building tools, frameworks, or libraries for developers; internal tools count. - Strong understanding of how modern web frameworks and build tools work. - Clear written and spoken English, with the ability to work asynchronously in a distributed team. - Interest in engaging with developer communities and learning from their needs. - Sound technical judgment, the ability to explain decisions, and openness to revising them. - Motivation to improve the developer experience. Previous open-source maintainer experience is not required.

Nice to have Public technical writing, talks, or videos; expertise in web ecosystems beyond React, such as Web Components, Angular, or React Native; familiarity with component development or visual testing tools; experience with AI-assisted development workflows or remote-first teams; or insight from a nontraditional path into software.
