Role overview
A CCTV Designer plans and specifies surveillance systems that support monitoring, recording, deterrence, and operational security across residential, commercial, and industrial environments. The role combines site assessment, technical design, equipment selection, documentation, systems integration, and project support from tendering through commissioning.
Responsibilities
- Conduct site surveys and security risk assessments to understand coverage requirements and operational risks. - Design camera layouts, viewing angles, coverage zones, mounting arrangements, recording architecture, and network requirements. - Select suitable cameras, lenses, recorders, storage, networking equipment, and related infrastructure. - Produce technical drawings, system specifications, bills of materials, and other design documentation. - Integrate CCTV with access control, intruder alarms, video analytics, and related security platforms. - Provide technical guidance during tendering, installation, commissioning, and project handover. - Keep designs current with developments such as intelligent video analytics, higher-resolution imaging, and cloud or hybrid recording.
Requirements
- Typically 3–5 or more years of experience designing and specifying CCTV systems. - Strong knowledge of IP video, Power over Ethernet, ONVIF, video compression, and storage calculations. - Understanding of networking, cybersecurity for video systems, and supporting IT infrastructure. - Familiarity with applicable surveillance standards and data-protection obligations, including GDPR-related considerations. - Proficiency with CAD or comparable design software for producing system drawings. - Clear communication skills and confidence working with clients and other project stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Relevant manufacturer certifications or security-industry qualifications. - Experience with recognised camera and surveillance equipment ecosystems. - Portfolio examples demonstrating previous CCTV design work.
