About this role

Role overview Lead the design and scaling of the central data platform behind a precision medicine company focused on brain health, powering clinical development, diagnostics, and digital health products. As Staff Engineer on the Datastore team, you will own complex systems that ingest, model, and serve brain physiology data to scientists, clinicians, and partners.

Responsibilities - Lead design and architecture for complex projects within the Datastore, weighing trade-offs against engineering principles and backing decisions with data. - Partner with product managers, scientific and clinical stakeholders, and other engineering teams to translate requirements into new integrations, services, and platform capabilities. - Debug and profile ambiguous problems that cross system boundaries, improving structure, test coverage, and tooling along the way. - Draft RFCs to lead complex feature discovery and technical design phases, aligning the team on a shared set of decisions. - Plan your own work and contribute to team planning, making reasoned trade-offs between speed, generality, and technical debt across multiple stakeholder teams. - Mentor other engineers, share feedback people act on, and act as a tech lead or coordination point for engineering practice within the team. - Improve operational robustness and ease of use via documentation, tools, and dashboards.

Requirements - 7+ years of backend development, including at least 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications such as transactional systems, event pipelines, and the APIs that serve them. - Deep proficiency in at least one relevant area: data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering. - Strong SQL skills with production PostgreSQL experience, including writing and tuning queries and reasoning about schema design, indexes, and query plans. - Hands-on experience with data streaming and event processing using Kafka or an equivalent such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or a cloud-based option like Amazon Kinesis. - Proficiency in Julia or Python; willingness to learn Julia, which is a core Datastore language. - Experience with GraphQL and TypeScript or JavaScript on Node.js. - Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments, including Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and/or Helm. - Track record of mentoring engineers and improving team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.

Nice to have - Experience using LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production, with sound judgment on guardrails.

Benefits and work setup Fully remote within the United States with asynchronous-first practices, plus in-person office hubs in Boston, New York City, and Paris. US-based salary range: $170,000-$190,000, plus equity, PTO, and a benefits package. Compensation is calibrated to experience, skills, and location.
